Befriending The Cold

From dull skin to flaky scalp, the chilly weather brings along an array of problems waiting to spoil your otherwise Instagram-worthy snaps! Neeharika Nene pens down a beauty guide to fight all your winter beauty woes.
After narrowly escaping a blazing summer, pouring rains, and another unwanted wave of heat in October, we finally find ourselves in the peaceful solace of winter. Finally it’s time to bring out those cute sweaters, chunky boots, and warm blankets that have patiently waited inside your cupboard all-year long. Unfortunately, your skin and hair don’t share the same sentiment about winter! For them, it’s pretty much one of the worst times of the year. That’s why, we’ve put together some easy tips, tricks, and hacks to put your biggest winter skin and hair woes to rest.

  1. Moisturising is key
One of the golden rules of caring for your skin is to keep it hydrated. During winters, your skin loses moisture at a much faster rate leading to dry, rough skin and chapped lips. Make it a habit to moisturise every single day and as many times as possible to keep your skin supple. Go for natural moisturisers such as olive oil, coconut oil and shea butter. However, an oil-free moisturiser will be your best bet.
  2. Oil your hair
Just like your skin gets dehydrated in the winter season, your hair can become dry too. Fret not, coconut oil will come to your rescue! It may seem inconvenient to oil your hair before a wash, and many may wrinkle their nose at the smell, but it’s actually one of the best natural and at-home treatments you can give to your hair. Thoroughly massage the oil into your hair and scalp and leave it on for half an hour. Then rinse it off.
  3. Say goodbye to hot water Yes, we know all too well how tempting it is to take a relaxing hot shower on a cold winter morning. But it definitely does more harm than good to your skin and hair. Hot water showers result in a loss of moisture from your skin, leaving it dehydrated. It also makes your hair brittle and dry. Cold water, on the other hand, actually helps strengthen it. But of course, there are very few things worse than a freezing shower in cold weather. Lukewarm water is best suited for your winter showers.
  4. Do away with the hairdryer
The last thing your hair needs during winters is to be dried out even further, and unfortunately, the hairdryer does just that. As much as you can, try to stay away from blow-drying, curling, and ironing your hair during winter. These treatments further worsen the problem of dehydration. In fact, it is advisable to keep the heat exposure to a minimum all-year round, irrespective of the season. It’s time to start rocking your natural texture!
  5. Lip balms are essential
Chapped lips are an extremely common winter concern. This problem becomes even harder to deal with due to the fact that your lip balm can easily wear off while eating or drinking. So when you go out, always keep a lip salve handy in your purse and re-apply whenever necessary. Even when you’re at home, make sure your lips are hydrated. It’s the easiest way to keep your lips luscious and healthy even in winter.
  6. Go the extra mile
Winter is that time of the year when your skin needs a little extra care and attention. Take some time out of your busy day to pamper your skin; make sure you follow a strict beauty routine. Exfoliation is
a must to rejuvenate your skin and keep it fresh and glowing. Night creams do an excellent job of protecting your skin during winters. When you moisturise your skin, pay extra attention to your elbows, as they dry out faster and often tend to get neglected in our skincare routine. Use petroleum jelly for cracked heels.
  7. Water is your best friend
What you put inside your body, shows on the outside. Keeping yourself hydrated not only includes moisturising your skin but also drinking plenty of water to keep you fresh throughout the day. Eating fresh fruits and green vegetables is another skincare essential to achieve healthy skin. In winter, you can’t easily tell when you’ve lost water. So keep replenishing at regular intervals. Sometimes, on a busy day, we tend to neglect ourselves and our bodies completely. Remind yourself to drink water at regular intervals and carry a bottle when you step out of the house. Hydrated is the new sexy!.
