E-file your tax now

Filing your tax returns is one of the dullest tasks on earth. But thanks to technology, filing your tax returns can smoothen out. All you need to have is a computer, an internet connection and your documents. Here’s a quick how-to guide on how to e-file your returns quickly and hassle-free.

  1. Choose your portal: There are various e-filing portals in the web arena for you to choose from. Some better known one's include incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in, taxspanner.com and taxsmile.com.
  2. Understand your package: There are various packages for e-filing, provided by different portals. For instance, for value-added services, you will need the advanced package. Some online portals offer separate packages for self-employed individuals, and special ones for professionals. The basic package is for salaried individuals and pensioners, who have to file ITR 1 and ITR 2.
  3. Go online: Sign into your account on the tax-filing portal;
    if you are a new user, you will have to register yourself first.
    Fill in your personal and financial information. Review the data you have filled in—as there could be typing errors—and then submit it
    for e-filing.
  4. Sign on: Get a printout of the acknowledgement receipt (ITRV) that you receive via email. Sign the acknowledgement receipt and post to the IT department in Bangalore within 120 days of e-filing. Your e-filing will be complete once you receive confirmation from the department.
